The Very Hungry Caterpillar Puppet Tutorial

I'm very proud today to introduce a super talented guest blogger, Alexandra from Kinderpendent. Alex is always inspiring me with her creative masterpieces and flare for imaginative design. It should come as no surprise that when I mentioned this weeks The Very Hungry Caterpillar theme to Alexandra that she quickly crafted together this amazing tutorial. I LOVE IT!! Thanks so much Alex!!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Puppet Tutorial

Materials:
yarn (greens, blues, yellow) & crochet hook (or you can use a long sock to bypass this part)
felt pieces (red and brown)
needle + thread

*crochet tutorial for the base (if you're using a sock, skip the crochet tutorials)
1. chain 4, join the ring with a slip stitch
2. chain 3, 3 double chains in each stitch around (12 DC), end round with a slip stitch
3. chain 3, 2 double chains in each stitch around (24 DC), end round with a slip stitch
4. chain 3, double chain in each stitch around (24 DC), end round with a slip stitch
5. repeat step four, alternating colors, until you've reached the desired length (mine has 19 rows).
6. end with a slip stitch, cut yarn, weave & tie.

*crochet tutorial for eyes & nose (to bypass, cut felt pieces instead)
using yellow yarn:
1. chain 3, join the ring with a slip stitch
2. chain 3, 10 DC in the center of the ring, end with a slip stitch
3. cut yarn, weave & tie.
(make 2)
using green yarn:
1. chain 3, join the ring with a slip stitch
2. chain 2, 6 SC in the center of the ring, end with a slip stitch
3. cut yarn, weave & tie, leaving the ends long.
(make 3)
Use the crochet hook to pull through the green thread through the center of the yellow circle. (see photos) Tie together and cut.

1. cut out a circle from red felt to use as the head.
2. cut out two antennae from brown felt (the longer the better--they'll be sewn behind the eyes)
3. using needle & thread, hand stitch the eyes, nose, and antennae to the red felt. (it's ok if it isn't perfect, you won't be able to see the back)
4. fold the top of the puppet's base (crocheted, or sock) to form the face area, then using needle & thread, sew the face onto the base behind the nose and eyes.
5. find some food to feed your very hungry caterpillar!
